After putting it off for a while I changed my thermostat & engine coolant temp sensor on the car yesterday. Drained the system and refilled 50/50 with Volvo green antifreeze. Car gets mighty warm more or less instantly and the gauge is at 3 o'clock as it should be but my fuel consumption is pretty pants now (23-25 mpg) and below what I used to get (26-28 mpg). :swoon: Needless to say I'm a little taken aback by this, any ideas other than the obvious air filter etc.... N.B.I should add that there is no tell tale signs of the creamy mayo on either the dipstick or the filler cap to suggest a head gasket failure. So I'm jiggered as to why my car is guzzling as much.
1. Do you know, or can you be sure that your new CTS is good? Try putting on the old one, and seeing if that makes any difference. 2. Thermostats are (IIRC) available for 2 temperatures for these Volvos. Perhaps you got the colder one as a replacement. Were your old parts definitely bad? If not, it may be worth putting them back on, one at a time, and seeing the effects on your fuel consumption. If nothing else, it would prove whether it's correlation or causation.
Well both were supplied and specced up by my local dealer so they are OEM parts. The Thermostat was jammed open slightly and wouldn't seat correctly. The temp sensor was very heavily corroded and the brass body was all green in colour. Both parts were date stamped 03/98 when the car was manufactured!, therefore I wouldn't be refitting the old parts. When I fitted the newbies yesterday, my fuel consumption initially rose to 31-33mpg, but now it has dropped to the level I stated earlier (23-25 mpg). Could it be that the ECU needs to readjust? or is that a silly daft question?
Are you sure it's not just drinking a bit more fuel because it's been very cold recently? I averaged about 27 - 28 with my T5 when I first got it, and the ambient temps were around 8 - 9 deg c. Now with average temps around -1 to 1 degree its about 24...
