what happens if you record the output of that track? and play that back? just wondering if it's choking before it gets to the master bus or after it gets to the master bus.
I'll do that test and get back to you shortly. As far as where it's "choking", again it's very strange because the peak meters shows correct level all down the line. It just cuts the sound, and only at that EXACT level of output. The other test I want to do is see if I add exactly, say, +3 dB gain on the track it's inserted on, then turn the master down by exactly - 3 dB to compensate, if it's still silent. From my previous tests, any change of level, whether in the plugin itself, the track it's on, or the master bus causes this effect to go away. (But I suspect you'll get single sample clicks any time things happen to work out to exactly 0 dB peaks... if people are reporting intermittent clicks that might be the cause.)
So as suspected, adding 3 dB to the track, then subtracting -3 dB on the master, the sound also goes away. So it looks like it's happening at the very last step in the signal path, where Reaper passes the audio to the driver. Rendered file sounds fine. Has anybody been able to replicate this with the demo plug I posted?
Ah! I'm 99% sure it's my Edirol UA-1000 driver now. When system sounds play (and mix with Reaper's output) I hear the tone come through. Also if I turn the system volume down any the problem goes away. Can someone without funky hardware try that plugin and tell me if they hear it too? You'll need all gains at zero, including your system volume (max it).

AH! This might also explain why certain MP3s that sound fine in Windows were making clicks on loud kick drum hits! Damn, it all works so great except for that. OK, unless someone else can confirm this on other hardware I'm going to assume it's the Edirol driver and not Reaper. And it seems I have a workaround, just keep the system volume ever so slightly below the max.
Just tried it on my MBP (using the built-in sound card) and it emits a (quite annoying :)) beep regardless of how I set the gain slider, track volume etc. I haven't tried it with my Edirol FA-66 but I will in a while. Regards, - Jonas
