Possible hydraulic lifter fault jammed with valve in open position

Thanks for the suggestions, folks. My No 1 son is going to have a go at an old engine (best Blue Peter stuff) in a donor type car to learn how to have a look. If that works he will then attack the newer car. Must have a look at the 'Chilton' book myself.
