gearbox transplant 240 to 740

will the gearbox from this: 1987 VOLVO 240 GL BLUE (230k) fit my 1987 VOLVO 740 TURBO (230et)??? the turbo did have the box with 4+ but dont care bout that! need a box on it fast! only one i can source localy is the one mentioned both engine are redblocks and all seems ok! but someones said about the propshaft being differant lengths??? A: can i change them easliy if thats the case??? B: what if i take more of the propshaft from the 240 will it all bolt up somewhere??? not too fusy as only a track car but needs to work!!!! ps both cars are estates

Yes the gearbox will fit but you need to change remote, mounting bracket and possibly prop flange. The problem is that this is not such a strong unit. Assuming the 240 box is a 5 speed you would need the front half of the prop of a 5 speed 740. You really need the correct box - I have a couple of these here on Anglesey if that is of any help - I do get to Liverpool/Manchester areas as well quite often. Mike

you were right in nearly eberything you said!!!!! i needed to change the remote none of the mounting brackets will fit to bodge a hold!!!! the prop shaft does need sorting (need the 5spd from a 740!got differant lengths from 240to 740 and 5speed to 4speed) and the flange is the same but wont reach the propshaft any ideas or follow the route youve put me on with 5speed 740 shaft???

Short of the correct o/d box the only answer is the 5speed front half of prop or send the existing one off to prop specialist to be lengthened. Mike

so the front half of the prop on a 240 is shorter than the 740??? i have 2x 240 props and my orig. 740 the 240 IS longer but not long enough???? cant find any old 740's 5speed that i can get the prop off im nera bournemouth/southampton any ideas ppl?????
