1) As per manual (PDF for v2.5, page 147)... - the pencil tool creates empty items if no item is selected. - if an item is selected, the pencil tool creates a duplicate of that item. The misbehavior is that the pencil tool creates duplicate items on tracks with existing items, even when none are selected. 2) The second issue with the pencil tool is that it creates a loop after 1 bar. No huge deal but it's needless decision-making on behalf of the software. Why 1 bar? Why not 2? etc... Suggestion: Create the loop point at the end of the created item... i.e. when the pencil tool is done, the created item (be it half a bar or 5 bars) is a single loop. So it's user definable and smarter. OR Don't create a loop at all with the pencil tool. I like the pencil tool, I use the pencil tool. Thank you! :) My current main uses for the pencil tool: - Create empty items to stick/glue in front of other items which do not start at the beginning of a bar (to round them off in a sense). - Create containers for various MIDI data, mostly stuff I enter manually. EDIT: Fixing the above in the pencil tool means that we don't have to mess up with the loop markers to insert a new midi item the place we want it, the size we want it. And here's a FR to take it even further... Holding down CTRL (activates pencil mode) and double-clicking in a loop region, creates a new empty midi item (i.e. a shortcut to menu Insert-->New MIDI item). Nice and fast!
The pencil tool is one thing, it has to be fixed and be made more useful. The other thing about enlarging/shortening MIDI items + item loops (like Gofer mentioned) is my other stumbling issue. I made a FR thread here:
So really, can this things be fixed? Everything as Evan said. I'm testing Reaper a few days now, everything is just great, but inability to draw an empty midi item (pencil always makes a copy of last selected item, even if none of them actually selected!) and the fact that length of new midi item is always 1 bar just freaks me out. Please, please fix it!
