... according to this webpage: Considering Digi doesn't even take advantage of the power of the G4 yet (altivec, for example), I wonder if they'll take advantage of the power of the G5. Hmf. In any case, I am planning on turning in my dual533G4 and getting a single processor G5 in either January or February. I sure could use the processing power to handle the plugins I use. Digi -- please see the faster G5s as a wake-up call to support technologies inherent in the G4 and G5 chip (not to mention OSX, firewire, and dual processors). Digi's future truly may be dependent on staying up to date on current technologies.... Ted.
I'm sorry, have you ever heard about the word "rumour"? To me, 1.6 GHz G5 sounds too good to be true. Also, you can't ask Digi to work on support for something that doesn't exist, and might never exist. As for OS X, I would be extremely surprised if Digi hasn't been working on it since they received their first copy.
more rumors for y'all, re: ProTools for OSX: 44249&page=&view=expanded&sb=5&o=&part=&returnto=h ttp://maccentral.macworld.com/news/0111/29.digides ign.php (copy and paste into your browser window emphasis on the word RUMOR. Incidentally, I would remind anyone whoe is planning a new G5 as soon as they come out about how long it took digi to approve the most recent Quicksilver G4's. If these G5s do actually have "DDR SDRAM memory, a "much faster" frontside bus and Gigawire" I think you'd be very sadly mistaken if you think you're just going to pop your digi001 card in them and be off and running. Just a word of caution to those quick to reach for their credit cards.
The stories now are that Apple has over 1000 G5 machines seeded to developers. I expect Digi has some. Now...what they will do with them is another question. Remember Avid sells a lot of Macs for Apple. They are an important developer. The G5s are coming. Current predictions are for an anncement in January and deliveries in February. That may slip due to production yield. But they are now being produced in sample volume.
I don't think this is just a rumour... Many serious pro. newspapers are saying that G5 (and new Motorola proc.) should be presented at Macworld in SF in January. The new processors should go from 1,2GHz to 1,6 GHz (2,4 GHz processors are also being announced but with more precautions). I certainly won't spend my money in what is probably gonna be a very expensive computer, but I'm curious and interested to see how far will the actual "big" G4s drop in prices (I could get my hand on one of those 800Hz models...). See you in January...
Yeah and I've heard that they are actually going to release 4Giga G7 triple processors in May, just in time for the release of OS XII (which is going to be the most stable OS ever to date). The new computers will never crash and the OS will be able to run Windows in the same time. Dream on, dream on... (Aerosmith)
I've heard digi is planning to support g5's and dual processors in the next "really big" release of pt. I dont know if the next release of pt would be the really big one though. But it makes sense, as rewrtiting the core of the dae would be the time to do those things.
