I track down noises with a length of small tubing in my ear, take the oil filler cap off and hold it "just" in there whilst listening, sometimes a screwdriver will transmit the noise if held against something hard such as alternator body, put yer ear against the handle and keep yer tie out of the fan. Something longer can be held against the lower crank block. Mine taps when cold and mostly becomes subdued when warm, I think its the valve spacer shims. Its hard to know what it could be unless you isolate the area its coming from, then other tests can be done to zero in, compression etc.
